Our shipment of a number of items fetched in your sale arrived today. It was packed exactly right by our standards. Moreover, everything had been accurately cataloged. Your staff are always so courteous and accommodating!"
- A. Lovell Elliott, Massachusetts

- Chuck Denlinger, Pennsylvania
"I would like to make a comment on my experience with placing my collection of Documents with Revenue stamps for auction by Smythe. I am pleased with the results and with very professional manner with which the entire transaction has been handled. I am a collector, not primarily looking for profits, BUT, of course, wish to recoup what I can fairly obtain when I dispose of my collection. That said; I am amazed that out of about 200 documents all have been sold except for the very few remaining. It is easy to dispose of items of value, or in demand, but you have also found a 'home' for items that are relatively common."
- J. Denison, Sarasota
"First let me say CONGRATULATIONS on your first sale of Herb and Martha Schingoethe’s notes! The sale was run beautifully, and I thought it was the most successful obsolete sale I have ever attended in my almost 30 years of this business! I already look forward to the next sale and the many others to follow. Please tell all the staff at Smythe of my praise, and keep up the good work"
- Hugh Shull, South Carolina

"The results of the last auction exceeded my expectation. Your firm demonstrated the pinnacle of professionalism from a perfectly laid out catalog

, an extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff, elegant viewing and auction facilities...which made every bidder feel special. I was impressed with the large number of dealers and collectors who actively bid on the lots in person and the added excitement of four staff members manning the phones. Your coming to my store to organize and estimate the lots made the consigning process simple. I will definitely use your services again and will recommend R.M. Smythe highly to all."
- R.C., New York
"I commend R.M. Smythe & Co. for refusing to sell "repaired", "restored", "processed", "cleaned", "pressed" or "conserved" items without disclosing those facts to the potential buyer. It seems the current market place is flooded with many such items that can fool even advanced collectors. This should give your potential buyers a lot more confidence that they will be treated fairly. In your Sept. 13-14, 2002 auction I was successful on one lot. I was quite pleased to receive the lot for my collection and to make it even better for me, you reduced the hammer price by $30.00. Thanks for accepting my bids and handling the auction in this manner. I was also pleased with the lots received in your auction #221. I appreciate being able to do business with a firm such as R.M. Smythe & Co."
- L.D., Missouri
"Thank you for the kindness you extended to us on our visit to your office. We were thrilled that the poster sold. Thank you!!"
- R. Huff
San Antonio, Texas
"I purchased the new Confederate book at St. Louis, and it is really packed with so much great information. I took out some notes when I got home just to try and see what varieties I had- it was fun and I was able to pinpoint exactly which they were (no great rarities, unfortunately!)."
- N. Shafer, Wisconsin
"Thanks so much for a very satisfying, pleasant, productive and interesting morning. Your coin trader sure knows the coin market and he did a very thorough job of looking at my collection. I am certain that his numbers were fair. His tour helped me better understand your business. I have been putting off the sale of the coin collection for years thinking it would be a difficult task. It sure wasn't, and I feel much relieved."
- J.T., Brooklyn, NY
"Everything worked out perfectly. The flat was waiting at the Post Office this morning at 9:30 and came through in great shape. Thanks for going the extra mile. I will mention my great satisfaction with your efforts to the Smythe people here in Orlando tomorrow. Thanks!"
- W. Wolka, IN
"I would like at this time to thank Smythe Auctions for sending catalogs of your auctions. Even though I only collect Canadian $1.00 bank notes and related Canadian $1.00 material I find the information in your well prepared catalogs very valuable. In particular the catalogs pertaining to the Herb and Martha Schingoethe collection are great."
-Cliff Beattie, Canada
"Many Thanks for Your really good Service! I'm always very happy with any purchase from Smythe. You work always very fast, exactly and correspond fully to the customer's desires. Please tell all the staff at Smythe of my praise, and keep up the good work."
-Mike Teichmeier, Germany

Spink Smythe is pleased to offer a wonderful set of letters and other items related to the RMS Titanic as part of our January Collector's Series Sale. The tragedy of the RMS Titanic was a media sensation at the time and has become an enduring cultural memory from the early 20th century. Built to be the unsinkable crown jewel of transatlantic luxury travel, she struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, with stops in Cherbourg and Cobh (then known as Queenstown). Sinking in less than three hours, she took with her 1517 of her 2223 passengers and crew, most of whom died of hypothermia in the frigid waters off Nova Scotia.

Highlighting the set are two letters written by passengers whilst they were aboard the ship. Letters from passengers aboard the Titanic are extremely rare and are justly among the most prized artifacts from the disaster.

Lot 3439. An excellent Autograph Letter Signed by perfumer "Adolf" Saalfeld, 1 p, 8vo, on stationery imprinted with the White Star Line red banner and the words "On board R.M.S. 'Titanic'," April 4, 1912.

He writes in full, "Dear [Wifey?], Thanks for your letter. I just had an hours roaming abt. on this wonderful boat together with Paul. I like my cabin [C-106] very much. It is like a bed-sitting room & rather large. I am the first man to write a letter on board, they are still busy to finish the last touches onboard. Au revoir in Whitweek please God! Love to you all! And a Kiss for you!"

Closed tear through left of page near horizontal fold repaired on verso with Scotch tape. Light toning, some soiling and edge wear, otherwise VG. Saalfeld would survive the disaster, leaping into lifeboat 3, filled with women and children. Perfume samples he had hoped to bring to start a business in the United States went down with the ship, but have, incredibly, survived and were retrieved by divers in 2000. Saalfeld died in Kew Gardens, England, in 1926. It is unclear who Paul was, though he does not appear to match anyone on the passenger lists and was therefore likely to have gone ashore before the ship sailed. Letters from passengers aboard the Titanic are extremely rare and are justly among the most prized artifacts from the disaster.

Estimate: $10,000-$15,000

Lot 3440. A remarkable Autograph Letter Signed "Geo. Graham," 1-1/2 pp, 12mo, on stationery imprinted with the White Star Line's red banner and the words "On board R.M.S. 'Titanic'," [Southampton, England], 4/10/1912. A salesman for Eaton's, the Canadian department store, he writes to Mr. W. Depmeyer in Berlin, a colleague he had apparently met during the European business trip from which he was returning.

He pens, "I am sorry that I neglected to send you a wire on the first of April but I for got [sic] all about it until Tuesday, you see. I arrived in London Late Sunday and I was very busy all day Monday and I forgot all about it however. I hope that you will accept my good wishes now even if they are a bit late. I hope to see you next year and that you and your good wife will enjoy good health..."

Second page folds closed to form a postal cover with White Star's logo on verso of cover and a 2-1/2 penny stamp on the address leaf. Uneven toning to first page and address page from prior display. Four plastic tape remnants on verso of first page and five on recto of second page, all at edges and none affecting readability. Otherwise VG. Mr. Graham joined the Titanic at Southampton with first-class ticket 112053 and was berthed in cabin B-52. On the night of Sunday, April 14, hours before the ship struck an iceberg, Graham wired his wife back in Canada that she should send him a telegram at Sandy Hook, NJ when they arrived the following Wednesday, and that he was well. She received the news on Tuesday morning, when the sinking was on everyone's lips, and took it to mean her husband had survived. It was not until she was about to depart for New York to meet him that she was informed that his body had been recovered in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. Letters written aboard the Titanic are among the most scarce and desirable articles connected with the tragedy.

Estimate: $10,000-$15,000
